If you don't want to pay out for office software such as word processing and spreadsheet use, it's worth investigating OpenOffice.org
It's developed by the Open Source community and is free for both personal and commercial use.
OpenOffice is compatible with Microsoft Office programmes and is very similar in functionality.
OpenOffice includes a close copy of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, and Microsoft's PowerPoint package. It can open, edit, and save Microsoft documents. Better yet, OpenOffice can create PDFs.
It's quite a large download but you can order a CD from a number of suppliers for a nominal sum.
