The Sunday Telegraph has reported that nearly 40,000 people have rung the Tax Evasion Hotline since it was launched in April. They say "it's the latest way to stitch up a neighbour, former lover or shoddy builder. The British public have responded enthusiastically to a new Government hotline on which they can anonymously report people for dodging tax. Many of the 266 calls a day are thought to be malicious or spurious, with tax experts reporting cases of divorcing couples denouncing each other."
HMRC wouldn't comment on how many investigations had been launched as a result, but it's now clear that falling out with others can also lead to tax problems! If you are under enquiry and know you've done nothing wrong, make sure you stand your ground. Please call us for assistance.
