Due to increased red tape and particularly the need for HMRC to combat VAT fraud, routine vat registrations are now taking as long as 8 weeks, compared to the usual couple of weeks.

This can cause problems for new businesses such as other businesses not wanting to deal with a non-registered business, delays in completion of property deals waiting on the vat registration and longer periods waiting to reclaim vat.

So if you are planning on setting up a new business, the sooner you apply for your vat registration, the better.
